one two three four i declare a cold sore...

As of late I feel that my life has been one big mashed up rollacoaster of time. I'm just so fucking busy - all the sodding time. In between the moments of madness where I take a breath, rub my hands together and say "well what's next"... I contemplate a time when I used to be bored. Yes this did exist. And I liked it.

I remember a time when I would come home from work and not have to turn my computer on whilst simultaneously stripping off my work clothes and eating an apple - Multi-tasking of several orders. I would casually get changed. Put some music on. Flick through a few channels. Maybe sit in the garden for a bit and call a friend. Then there would be those still bits where I'd tap my fingers on the arm of the chair at what is on the TV and utter those distant words "i'm bored". My girlfriend would come home from work and ask what I've been doing. I would reply with "nuffin" - hands in pockets.

Today my girlfriend comes home and asks me whether it has been a constructive day... I reply with:

"yeh not bad, i managed to sort out the issues with overlapping text on my comedy site but then had to re-do the sidebar as a result, which was good but then I had an idea for a blog entry so wrote that. I also got an email about some web design that needs doing for some guy in the states so I had to spec that out and get an email to him. And yes before you ask I did fix the taps in the shower and put the washing out and oh your mother rang and the roof is being fixed next thursday..." deep breath "... as for work at real work... well that was pretty dull. I had a meeting about what to do if there is a fire and we saw a video of somebody getting electrocuted. Apart from that it's been pretty quiet today."

I have a question for everyone really. How do you find the time? Is it possible to train yourself to need less sleep? Are there any health disadvantages? I'm one of those people that if they don't get 8 hours sleep wakes up wanting the whole world to shut up and die. I'd love to be able to manage on five. But how? Any tips? I've heard viagra works?

As I understand it, the less sleep you have, the longer you'll live. I got to bed at about 1am and rise at 9am, so I'm getting eight hours. I try to get up earlier, but I just can't do it.

You should be having it off at least ten times a day. Eat lots of zinc tablets.

Hrm...I am actually one of the strange few who actually only needs five or six hours of sleep in a day.

Not. That. I actually get anything accomplished in the extra hours I have...I just sleep less and zone out more.

Sorry...no help here, really.

Sleeping with your other half ccan be bad for your brain power! Well that goes for guys! You girls seem to be okay! So if you have something important the next day sleep in different beds!

I'm also one of those people that needs 8 hours a day but never gets it! I had five to six hours last night so i'm very tired!

I try to survive on five hours sleep so I can do more with my evenings but in the morning I'm still like a zombie.

Actually the less sleep you have, the shorter your life span. At least in mice. But it is possible to shorten the amount of sleep you need without long-term drawbacks. People who only need 5 hrs sleep a night simply pack more into what sleep they do have. Visualise it this way: people who naturally sleep for shorter periods pack the same number "waves" (we'll call them) into their period of sleep (say, 5 hrs) as someone who needs to sleep longer does in 8 hrs. So they're essentially getting the same amount of sleep, only in a shorter period of time. You can also train yourself to do this. Military personnel do this all the time. I can't remember exactly how you do train yourself but I know for sure that you can :) I usually get by on about 5 hrs per night but I really need closer to 8 :P

some of my friends manage on less than 6 hrs sleep. wish i could do that. same as you, w/o my 8 hrs, i have trouble. which explains my current state. but then, have been having too much fun to really make an effort to get my 8 hrs back...i guess it's a case of where there's a will, there's a way

minge - the problem I have is that I get up at 5.30am. This means a stupid time to go to bed. I do martial arts twice a week and don't get to bed those nights until midnight. five and half hours sleep is a right killer.

blonde - so the more sex thing...am going through a phase of this at the moment. Not helping me with my work but I have been smurking more :-)

minge - on my way to holland and barret now!

hill - I envy you bitch. I could have ten hours sleep and would still be zoning out. I feel and experiment coming on.

nrm - luckily we do tend to have this agreement. Expecially when one of us is ill. You get sent to the spare room in these circumstances and I get to make a giant star in my giant bed!

invader stu - dito hill, bitch. I applying the electrodes now.

boffin - interesting thought. I'm going straight to google after writing this.

archaeologist - the too much fun thing is always a dilema for me. My girlfriend bought me a card the other day which read:

my aim is to be promoted,
my goal is to be boss,
my aspiration is to be powerful,
my dream is to be rich,
my desire is to be at the top.
but for the moment i'll just stay here in bed for a while.

Completely sums up my whole split personality.

I've seriously thought about different beds, I just can't stretch out and get comfy.

Sex, and masturbation always make you tired. One or the other, at least once a day.

i have to get at least 8 hours sleep or i'm cranky. Attempting to train myself to sleep less does not work, although the current weather is doing a good job of keeping me awake anyway. I think that if you need your 8 hours, you always will it can't be changed. Old habits die hard.. or something.

If I don't get 9 hours sleep then I'm not human, and no amount of coffee can help, so the answer is no. I can't train myself.

I try to prioritise where possible. Saying no to some things helps.

I'm an 8 hour person as well. If I get less I just don't function, simple as that. I'd love an extra 3 hours in my day though.

I find I work especially well late into the night so when there is something to do with very little and still be alright during the day. When there's nothing to do I kinda sleep the whole day even when I'm awake.

As for health risks, not sure yet.

Nobody has mentioned crack cocaine. Do you want to be a success or not? How do you think Moss has stayed at the top for so long? Rimmel Recover Anti-Fatigue Foundation can only do so much, you know.
